Our History...
First Baptist Church has its roots in the European movement in the early 1800s
away from State controlled churches to groups of believers seeking to follow
their own consciences guided by the Scriptures. Over one hundred years ago,
after much prayer and fellowship, a band of believers formed the Baptist Church
of Elgin in 1879. It was affiliated with the German Baptist denomination which
became the present day North American Baptist Conference. The church had
purchased an old church building in 1878, and continued to meet there until the
fall of 1898 when they dedicated the new building which is our present facility
at 300 Main Street.
The church from its earliest days has emphasized music, being blessed with
gifted musicians through the years. However, the church's first commitment has always
been to the Lord and to the preaching, teaching, and living out of God's Word.
Seeking to continue in the fine tradition of our heritage, we are committed to
following the Lord and His Word as we touch lives with the Love and power of
Jesus Christ.
